Do I Need a Drone License?
On June 1st, 2019, Transport Canada introduced new regulations for drones. The new regulations require anyone flying a drone that weighs 250 grams or more to have a drone pilot certificate, also known as a drone license.
Similar to a driver’s license, having a drone license is not an option. Regardless of whether you fly a drone for fun or business, if you intend to operate a drone in Canada, obtaining a license is mandatory.
How Do I Get a Drone License?
The written exams can be taken any time online with Transport Canada. Transport Canada strongly recommends that you attend a drone flight school before attempting the exam. That’s why we made online courses to help you ace Transport Canada’s drone exams. After you pass the exam Transport Canada will provide you with your certificate. If you passed the basic exam you’re all set to fly basic operations. After passing the advanced exam, and then completing an in-person flight review you’ll be fully certified to fly under the advanced category.
Difference Between Basic and Advanced
If you're interested in flying a drone in Canada, it's important to understand the differences between basic and advanced drone certificates. Basic drone operators are not allowed to operate in controlled airspace and must keep their drones at least 30 metres away from the public, whereas advanced drone operators can safely operate within controlled airspace and can fly closer to the public. Both basic and advanced certificates come with the same aircraft weight restrictions of 250g to 25kg.
